Flipping Toys for Christmas 2026: When to Buy, List and Ship by Dec 17

A Christmas 2026 calendar for toy resellers on eBay and Facebook Marketplace: hot toy lists, break-even math, recall checks and the Dec 17 USPS cutoff.

By the AI Flip Ledger team · October 19, 2026 · 8 min read

Toys are the one category where the calendar sets the price more than the item does. The same playset that sells in two days on December 10 can sit until February if it is still in your garage on December 21. For a toy reseller, Q4 is not one season; it is four short windows, and each one has a different job.

This is the plan for Christmas 2026, built for people who flip toys on eBay and Facebook Marketplace: clearance and retail-arbitrage buyers, thrift and garage-sale pickers, and anyone holding a shelf of new-in-box toys. Every date and fee below was checked on October 19, 2026 against the official source.

The dates that run the season

Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, so Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday is November 30.

USPS published its 2026 holiday send-by dates for expected delivery by December 25 in the lower 48:

USPS calls these recommended dates, not guarantees. Most free-shipping toy listings go out by Ground Advantage, so December 17 is your real last day, and since a buyer needs time to find and pay for the listing, your last good day to list a Christmas toy is closer to December 10 to 12.

We covered the UPS and FedEx dates and the handling-time settings in Holiday Shipping Deadlines 2026. This article is about what to buy and when to sell it.

Four windows, four jobs

Now to November 1: source

This is the buying window. Post-Halloween clearance starts November 1, garage-sale season is winding down in most of the country, and thrift stores are full of donated toys before the holiday donation wave. Anything you buy after about December 1 has very little time to sell before the cutoff, so buy now or plan to hold it until next year.

November 2 to November 30: list everything

Get every Christmas toy live before Black Friday. Buyers start searching in November, and a listing that has been up for three weeks has had time to collect watchers. Bundles, lots and sets belong here too.

December 1 to December 17: sell and ship fast

This is peak demand. Ship same day or next day, keep handling time short, and answer messages quickly. Expect "will this arrive by Christmas?" questions and answer them honestly with the USPS date.

December 18 to 24: go local

After the Ground Advantage cutoff, a shipped buyer either pays for Priority or does not buy. This is where Facebook Marketplace local pickup earns its keep: a parent who needs a gift on December 22 will drive 15 minutes for it. Anything still unsold on December 24 becomes January inventory, and toy demand drops hard after Christmas, so price to clear before then.

A toy listed December 10 has a week to sell. A toy listed November 10 has five. Most of the profit in a toy flip is decided by the date it goes live.

What is hot this year, and why that is a trap

The Toy Insider's 2026 Hot 20, STEM 10 and 12 Under $20 lists (as covered by TODAY, updated September 25, 2026) include the Bluey Light and Surprise Heeler House, Tickle Me Elmo Giggle Max, KPop Demon Hunters dolls, a PokΓ©mon TCG 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box, a Disney Lorcana starter set, LEGO Star Wars Smart Play sets, CrunchLabs builds and NeeDoh squishy toys.

These lists are useful for knowing what parents are searching for. They are dangerous as a shopping list, because thousands of other resellers read them too. A toy that every store has on the shelf at full retail will not sell for much over retail on eBay. The flips that work are the ones where you pay well under retail (clearance, thrift, garage sales, liquidation) or where the item is genuinely hard to find.

Two warnings from this year's list:

The break-even math on a retail buy

eBay's fee page (as of October 2026, sellers without a Store) charges 13.6% in most categories, which includes most of Toys & Hobbies, and 13.25% in Toys & Hobbies > Collectible Card Games, plus $0.40 per order over $10. The fee is charged on the total amount of the sale, including shipping you charge and the buyer's sales tax. The examples below assume 8% sales tax and use example label costs; use your own.

A sealed card box bought at $50

You buy an elite trainer box for $50 and sell it for $70 with free shipping:

The break-even sale price on that box is about $69.32. On a full-retail buy, you need roughly 39% over what you paid just to get your money back. That is why "buy the hot toy at Target, flip it on eBay" rarely works unless the item is truly sold out everywhere.

A $25 toy bought on clearance for $8

You sell it for $34.99 with free shipping:

Same toy, still unsold on December 26, marked down to $24.99: fee $4.07, same label, same cost, profit $4.42. Missing the window cost about $8.50 on one toy. Across 40 toys, that is $340.

Facebook Marketplace: shipped vs local

Facebook's Merchant Terms (as of October 2026) charge 10% per shipped transaction with a $0.80 minimum, on the entire amount including shipping and tax. Local, in-person sales paid in cash or by your own payment app carry no Facebook fee.

The same $8 clearance toy at $34.99 with free shipping on Facebook: fee 10% of $37.79 = $3.78, label $8.50, profit $14.71. Sold locally for $30 cash, there is no fee and no label: $22.00 before your driving. At the IRS rate of 76 cents a mile for business driving in the second half of 2026, a 6-mile round trip to a meetup costs $4.56, leaving $17.44.

That is why we treat December 18 to 24 as a Facebook local window. Nothing ships in time, but a nearby parent will still pay close to full price for a gift today. We broke down the local-versus-shipped math in Facebook Marketplace local pickup vs shipping.

Check every toy for recalls before you list it

eBay's product safety policy bans items recalled by a manufacturer or a government agency, and eBay removes listings reported as recalled. Thrift and garage-sale toys are where recalled items hide: baby gear, sleepers, magnets, small-parts toys and older ride-ons.

Before you list a used toy, search the brand and model at CPSC.gov recalls. It takes a minute and protects both the buyer and your account. If a toy is recalled, it is not inventory; write it off and move on.

Keep the receipts: toys are a bookkeeping mess

Toy flipping creates a lot of small purchases from a lot of places: a $3 garage-sale bag, eight clearance items on one receipt, a $40 thrift haul. Two habits keep this from becoming a problem at tax time:

  1. Record the cost per item the day you buy it. If eight toys came on one $64 receipt, split the cost across the eight, so each sale shows its real profit.
  2. Log your sourcing miles. At 76 cents a mile, a 30-mile Saturday clearance loop is $22.80 of deductions. Write the date, the stores and the miles.

Anything unsold on December 31 is ending inventory, not an expense. We covered how ending inventory flows into cost of goods sold in Schedule C for resellers.

What we do in our shop

We are a family reseller in Mesa, Arizona, and most of our Q4 inventory comes from auctions and liquidation, not retail shelves. The lesson we keep relearning is the one in the math above: the profit comes from what we pay, and the date decides whether we keep it. We list toys and gifts by mid-November and drop prices on anything still sitting in the second week of December, rather than carry it into January.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last day to ship toys for Christmas 2026?

USPS recommends December 17 for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, December 18 for Priority Mail and December 19 for Priority Mail Express, for delivery in the lower 48 by December 25. International is December 9. These are recommended dates, not guarantees.

Is it worth buying hot toys at retail to resell?

Usually not. With eBay's 13.6% fee charged on the price plus sales tax, plus a label, a $50 retail buy needs to sell for roughly $69 just to break even. Clearance, thrift and liquidation buys are where toy margins come from.

What are eBay's fees on toys in 2026?

As of October 2026, most Toys & Hobbies categories pay 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 plus $0.40 per order over $10, for sellers without a Store. Collectible Card Games pay 13.25%. Check the category before you list.

Can I sell used toys that were recalled?

No. eBay prohibits items recalled by a manufacturer or a government agency and removes those listings. Check the brand and model at CPSC.gov before you list any used toy.
