eBay Certified Recycled: What Used Auto Parts Sellers Do Now (2026)

eBay's Certified Recycled badge and Part on Vehicle condition reached US Motors in October 2026. What it means for small used auto parts resellers.

By the AI Flip Ledger team · October 12, 2026 · 7 min read

If you pull parts at a self-service yard, part out a donor car in the driveway, or buy auto parts lots at auction, eBay Motors changed under you twice in three weeks. On September 24, 2026, airbags came off the site for every seller. Then eBay's October 2026 Seller News brought the Certified Recycled program to the US, with a badge, a search filter and a new item condition that most small sellers cannot use.

This article is for auto-parts resellers on eBay and Facebook Marketplace who are not licensed recycling yards. It covers what changed, who qualifies, what a used part really pays after fees, and five things to do with your listings this month.

What changed on eBay Motors (as of October 2026)

1. Certified Recycled is live in the US. eBay's program page describes it as a program for "qualified automotive recyclers selling recycled parts on eBay." Participating sellers get a Certified Recycler badge, a dedicated search filter and, in eBay's words, higher search ranking. Their listings carry structured condition details: a condition grade, a damage code, the part's location and mileage where relevant. The program launched in the UK in August, according to Value Added Resource.

2. A new condition, "Used - Part on Vehicle." Eligible parts can be listed while still bolted to the donor vehicle. After a buyer orders, the seller removes and inspects the part, ships it if it passes, and cancels the order if it does not. The buyer page says the listing tells the buyer the part comes off only after the sale.

3. Airbags are gone. eBay's policy announcement says airbags and airbag inflators "are not permitted to be listed or sold on eBay by any seller" as of September 24, 2026. Standalone steering wheel airbag covers are out too. In the US, related parts that hold no airbag or inflator (control units, crash sensors) are limited to sellers who were already pre-approved. Relisting a removed item can bring selling restrictions.

Who can get the badge, and who cannot

eBay is not the certifier. The program page lists the requirements:

That is a path for an operating recycling facility. If you sell 20 to 200 parts a month from a garage, a storage unit or a pickup bed, plan on not having the badge this year. The page does not list a cost, and it shows both "Apply now" and "Application coming soon" in different spots, so check it again before you apply.

One limit worth knowing when you compete: the certification covers the seller and the grading process. eBay says plainly that it is "not a physical inspection by eBay" of each part.

You cannot out-badge a certified yard. You can out-describe one: the exact part number, the donor's year, engine and mileage, and photos of the actual part.

What a used part pays after fees

eBay's fee for sellers without a store is 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 in most categories, a row that names eBay Motors Parts & Accessories, plus $0.40 per order over $10, as of October 2026. The percentage applies to the item price, the shipping the buyer pays and sales tax. Tax is left out below to keep the math clean, and the postage is an example.

Meta charges individual sellers 10% per transaction with a $0.80 minimum, figured on the whole amount.

Facebook Marketplace, local pickup

The trip counts too

The IRS business mileage rate is 76 cents per mile for July through December 2026. A 30-mile round trip to the yard is $22.80. Pull six parts and that is $3.80 each. Pull one alternator and the $51.07 becomes $28.27.

What one fitment return costs

Auto parts get returned more than most categories because the part "does not fit." When a buyer opens a return as not as described, you generally pay the return label. On the alternator that is $14.50 out and about $14.50 back: $29.00 in postage for a sale that paid nothing, or 57% of the profit from one good sale.

It also touches your fees. eBay's fee page says a seller rated Very High for "item not as described" returns in a category is charged an additional 5% on final value fees in that category the following month, rising to 6% after four straight months.

Five things to do this month

  1. Remove anything airbag-related. Airbags, inflators and standalone steering wheel airbag covers are banned for every seller, and US sellers need prior approval for the related sensors and control units. If you sell steering wheels, seats or dash assemblies, read the policy before listing one that still holds a module.
  2. Do not copy "Part on Vehicle" without the program. The condition is for eligible parts under Certified Recycled. If you list a part you have not pulled and then cancel, eBay's cancellation page says an out-of-stock cancellation "may receive a transaction defect." eBay has not published how cancellations under the new condition are scored, so we would not assume they are free even for certified sellers.
  3. Match the bar buyers will now see. The buyer page lists CARE minimums of a 30-day return window for many parts and a 90-day warranty on mechanical parts such as engines and transmissions. You may not want to warranty an engine, but a 30-day return policy on small parts puts your listing level with the badge on the one line buyers compare.
  4. Write the listing a yard would. Put the OEM part number in the title, fill in eBay's compatibility chart, state the donor vehicle's year, model, engine and mileage, and photograph the actual part, including the connector and any tag. Every one of these cuts fitment returns, and each return you avoid is worth about $29 in the example above.
  5. Send heavy parts to local buyers. Doors, bumpers, seats, hoods and wheel sets are expensive to ship and easy to damage. List them on Facebook Marketplace for pickup, where there is no selling fee on a cash sale. Keep sensors, modules, switches, trim and alternators on eBay, where the buyer searching a part number is.

Costing a parts car or an auction lot

The profit math above only works if each part has a cost. A donor car does not come with one.

Say you are $700 into a wrecked sedan after the bid, the buyer fee and the tow. You expect to list 25 parts for $3,200 in total. Split the cost by asking price: $700 รท $3,200 = 21.9% of each part's price.

When the shell goes for scrap, record what the scrap yard pays as one more sale from that car. Now every part shows a real profit, and you can see after ten sales whether the car has paid for itself. The same split works for a box of mixed parts from an auction.

We are a liquidation reseller in Mesa, Arizona, not a salvage yard, but an auction lot poses the same problem as a parts car: one price paid, many items to spread it across. AI Flip Ledger does the split for you, by asking price or evenly, and carries each part's cost to the sale along with the fee and the label. Frequently asked questions

Can a small seller join eBay's Certified Recycled program?

Only if you meet the recycler requirements. As of October 2026, eBay requires active membership in the Automotive Recyclers Association or United Recyclers Group and the CARE designation, which includes audits. eBay does not certify sellers itself.

What does "Used - Part on Vehicle" mean on eBay?

It is a new item condition for eligible parts still installed on a donor vehicle when listed. The seller removes and inspects the part after the order, then ships it or cancels. It is part of the Certified Recycled program, not a general option for listing parts you have not pulled.

What is the eBay fee on used auto parts in 2026?

For sellers without a store, eBay Motors Parts & Accessories falls under the most-categories rate: 13.6% of the total sale up to $7,500 per item, plus $0.40 per order over $10 or $0.30 on orders of $10 or less, as of October 2026. Whole vehicles use a separate fee schedule.

Can I still sell airbags on eBay?

No. Since September 24, 2026, airbags, airbag inflators and standalone steering wheel airbag covers are not allowed for any seller. In the US, related parts without an airbag or inflator are limited to sellers eBay had already pre-approved.
