Q4 Sourcing Plan for Resellers: What to Buy in October and November
A Q4 2026 sourcing plan for eBay and Facebook Marketplace resellers: what to buy in October and November, what sells in December, what to avoid, and cash limits.
Q4 is when reseller inventory turns fastest, and it is also when resellers make their most expensive buying mistakes. The window is short. Anything you buy has to be sourced, tested, photographed, listed and shipped in time to arrive before December 25. Buy too late and it sits until January. Buy too much and your cash is locked in inventory right when the tax bill and the return wave arrive.
This is a practical plan for the next 12 weeks, written on October 7, 2026, for resellers selling on eBay and Facebook Marketplace.
The 2026 calendar that drives every decision
Work backward from these dates:
- Now through October 31: prime sourcing window. Items bought now have time to be listed and found by early holiday shoppers.
- November 26: Thanksgiving. November 27: Black Friday. November 30: Cyber Monday.
- December 17: the USPS recommended send-by date for Ground Advantage to arrive before December 25 in the lower 48. Priority Mail is December 18 and Priority Mail Express December 19, per the USPS 2026 holiday shipping dates. These are recommendations, not guarantees.
- October 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027: USPS holiday prices stack on top of the 8% transportation surcharge. See our USPS holiday surcharge breakdown for the per-package numbers.
- January: holiday returns come back, and the fourth quarterly estimated tax payment is due January 15, 2027.
Anything you buy after about December 1 is really January inventory. Price your bids for that.
What to buy in October
October is for items that need listing time and will sell steadily from early November through mid-December.
Gift categories with broad demand
- Toys and games: sealed building sets, board games, popular character toys, ride-ons and outdoor toys for local sale.
- Video games and consoles: games, controllers and accessories, tested before listing.
- Small electronics: headphones, speakers, smart home devices, tablets and e-readers in good tested condition.
- Kitchen appliances: air fryers, blenders, coffee makers, stand mixers. These are popular gifts and also strong local Facebook sellers.
- Tools: power tools, tool sets and batteries. Tools are a classic gift category that holds value.
Holiday decor, early
Christmas decor sells from late October into the first part of December, then demand falls off quickly. Buy it now or not at all. Price it to move by mid-December, because whatever is left becomes an 11-month storage problem.
Cold-weather and seasonal gear
Coats, boots and winter accessories sell through fall in colder markets. Brand and condition drive the price, so be selective.
What to buy in November
By November, the goal shifts from building inventory to filling gaps with fast sellers.
- Buy what you can list within a week. If an item needs repair, research or heavy cleaning, it may miss the window.
- Favor light, small items you can ship cheaply before December 17.
- Pick up bulky items for local sale. A table saw, a big TV or a kids' play kitchen can sell well on Facebook Marketplace as local pickup in December, with no selling fee and no far-zone shipping label.
- Stop most sourcing by early December unless the item is clearly January-proof (tools, electronics, everyday household goods).
What sells in December
December demand favors items that work as gifts and can arrive on time:
- New or like-new items in original packaging
- Recognizable brands at a fair price
- Items that ship quickly and safely
- Local pickup items for last-minute buyers who do not want to wait on shipping
After the shipping cutoffs, local pickup becomes your best channel. Buyers who missed the shipping window still want gifts, and Facebook Marketplace local sales do not depend on a carrier.
Also watch eBay Seller Hub for any holiday programs or promotions eBay announces this season, and check them against your margins before opting in.
What to avoid
- Halloween inventory after mid-October. Whatever does not sell by October 31 waits a year.
- Untested electronics at full price. Returns in January can erase the profit on several good sales.
- Heavy items you plan to ship free to far zones. With two USPS surcharges in effect, a free-shipping heavy item can lose money. Sell it locally or use calculated shipping.
- Large lots you cannot list before December. A pallet that takes six weeks to process is January inventory.
- Brands with a history of intellectual property takedowns unless you know the rules for that brand.
- Buying on volume alone. A source that produces lots of items at low profit per item can be your worst use of time in Q4.
Cash-flow limits: set a Q4 buying budget
Q4 is the easiest time to over-buy. Set a budget before you source, not after. A simple method:
- Start with the cash you have today.
- Subtract an estimated amount for your January 15, 2027 tax payment.
- Subtract a supplies and shipping float for the next 90 days (labels, boxes, tape).
- Subtract a cushion for January returns.
- Whatever is left is your sourcing budget. Spend most of it in October, and keep some for November gaps.
Example: $3,000 in cash, minus $600 for the January estimate, minus $500 for supplies and labels, minus $300 for returns, leaves $1,600 to source. Spend about $1,100 in October and hold $500 for November. These are example numbers; use your own.
Know your turn rate
The best guide to how much you can buy is how fast your own inventory sells. If items from auctions sell in 20 days on average and pallet items in 60, an auction dollar spent in October can come back and be spent again before Christmas. A pallet dollar spent in late November probably will not.
AI Flip Ledger's AI Advisor reads your own sales, lots and unsold stock and ranks your sources by real profit per item and days to sell, so you can decide where your Q4 dollars go based on your own numbers. It also flags stale stock to reprice or bundle before the season ends. Questions about setting it up? Email the owner directly at [email protected]. A real person answers.
Clear old inventory to fund Q4
Before you buy anything new, look at what has been sitting. Inventory that has not sold in 90 days is cash you could be using for holiday stock. Mark it down, bundle it, or move it locally. Holiday traffic is the best chance all year to clear slow items, because more buyers are browsing.
In our own shop, a family liquidation reseller in Mesa, Arizona that buys at auction and sells on eBay and locally, Q4 is when we look hardest at old stock, because every dollar freed up in October can be sourced and sold again before Christmas.
Frequently asked questions
When should resellers stop sourcing for Christmas?
For shipped sales, most sourcing should be done by early December so items can be listed and shipped before the December 17 USPS Ground Advantage recommendation. Local pickup items can be bought a little later.
What sells best on eBay in December?
Gift-ready items: toys and games, video games, small electronics, kitchen appliances and tools, especially new or like-new with original packaging and fast shipping.
Should I sell holiday items on Facebook Marketplace?
Yes for bulky and heavy items. Local pickup sales have no Facebook selling fee and no shipping label, and they keep selling after the shipping cutoffs pass.
How much should I spend on Q4 inventory?
Set a budget from cash on hand after setting aside your January 15, 2027 estimated tax payment, a supplies float and a returns cushion. Spend most of it in October.
