January Returns on eBay: How Resellers Handle the Holiday Return Wave

Prepare for January returns on eBay and Facebook Marketplace: return policy settings, response deadlines, refund deductions and how to resell returns.

By the AI Flip Ledger team · October 7, 2026 · 6 min read

Every reseller who has a strong December gets a second wave in January: the returns. Gifts that did not fit, duplicates, "changed my mind" and a few real problems all come back at once, at the same time holiday shipping prices are still in effect.

You cannot stop the wave, but you can decide in October how big it gets and how much it costs. This article covers the eBay return settings that matter, the deadlines you have to hit, when to accept versus push back, and how to turn returned items back into sales.

Set your return policy before the rush

eBay's return policy options are: no returns, 30-day buyer-paid returns, 30-day free returns, 60-day buyer-paid returns, or 60-day free returns. Some categories, such as jewelry and cameras, allow 14 days.

Your choice for November and December listings decides how long the January wave lasts. A 30-day window on an item sold December 10 closes around mid-January. A 60-day window keeps it open into February.

Holiday return windows

In past years eBay has offered sellers an opt-in extended holiday returns setting, where items bought in November and December could be returned until the end of January. As of early October 2026, eBay's September seller news announced no changes to returns for this peak season. Check Seller Hub's return preferences in late October before you decide, and read any program terms carefully. Longer windows can help conversion on gift items, but they extend your exposure.

"No returns" does not mean no returns

Even with "no returns accepted," eBay says a buyer can still return an item that does not match the listing under the eBay Money Back Guarantee. "No returns" only protects you from change-of-mind returns. Clear photos and honest condition notes protect you from everything else.

The deadlines you cannot miss

eBay's guide to handling return requests sets two clocks:

In January, when returns stack up, these clocks are where sellers get hurt. Check the returns queue every business day, even on slow days.

Missing the 3-day response window can cost you both the money and the item. Check returns daily in January.

Your options on each request

You can accept the return, offer a partial refund so the buyer keeps the item, refund in full and let them keep it, send a replacement, decline (only for change-of-mind requests when your listing said no returns), or message the buyer.

When to accept, when to push back

Not every return deserves the same response. Run the numbers before you click.

Refund without a return when the label costs more than the item

An $18 item with a $9.50 return label: if you accept the return, you pay the label, wait a week, and get back an item you may need to test, regrade and relist. If the item would resell for $14 at best, refunding without a return is often cheaper and faster. Set a dollar line and stick to it.

Accept quickly when you will probably lose

If the buyer says the item is not as described and your photos do not clearly prove otherwise, accept promptly. Fighting a case you will likely lose costs time and can affect your seller standards.

Use the condition deduction when it applies

Under eBay's condition of returned items policy, if you qualify, you can deduct up to 50% of the refund when an item comes back used, damaged or missing parts. eBay's guidance ties eligibility to offering free returns (and to Top Rated sellers with 30-day or longer returns), and you lose the ability to deduct once eBay steps in to a case. Document the condition with photos the day it arrives.

The deduction is for lost value only. It is not a restocking fee, and it does not cover the return label.

Facebook Marketplace returns

Facebook's Purchase Protection covers shipped items bought through Marketplace checkout. Local pickup sales and deals arranged in Messenger are not covered. For shipped orders, Meta's seller policies give you 2 days to respond to a buyer's refund request, and buyers have 7 days from delivery to file a claim. You are expected to follow the return policy shown on your listing and refund promptly once the item is back.

For local pickup sales, returns depend on your own terms. Ask buyers to test the item at pickup, and say "sold as-is after pickup" in the listing if that is your policy.

Turn returns back into sales

A returned item has already cost you fees and two labels. Getting it back on the market fast is how you recover some of that.

  1. Inspect and test the same day. Compare it to your original photos.
  2. Regrade honestly. A gift return that was opened is no longer "new." List it as open box or used and say what is included.
  3. Re-photograph if anything changed. Missing accessories or new scuffs belong in the photos.
  4. Relist as for parts if it fails testing. In our shop, a return that fails testing goes back up as "for parts or not working," not as used. It sells for less, but it does not come back again.
  5. Price for a quick sale. January traffic is slower than December. Pricing a returned item a little under the market moves it before it becomes stale stock.

Know your fee credits

eBay's fee page notes that when you refund a buyer you may be eligible for fee credits. Check that the credit actually posts on your invoice. The return label, if you paid it, is not credited.

Budget for January now

Returns do not show up on December's sales report. They show up as January refunds against December's revenue. The holiday USPS prices also stay in place until January 17, 2027, so return labels in early January cost more (see our USPS holiday surcharge breakdown).

A simple approach: set aside a percentage of December sales, based on your own return rate, until the return windows close. If your history says 5% of sales come back, hold 5% of December revenue plus an estimate for return labels.

AI Flip Ledger subtracts refunds and return labels from each sale, so a December sale that came back in January shows its real result instead of inflating December's profit. The bottom line

The January returns wave is predictable. Pick your return window on purpose, check the returns queue every business day, refund without a return when the math says so, use the condition deduction only when you qualify, and get returned items relisted quickly with honest grading. Then measure December's profit after January's refunds, not before.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to respond to an eBay return request?

3 business days. If you do not respond, eBay may refund the buyer and seek reimbursement from you. After the item comes back, you have 2 business days to issue the refund.

Can I charge a restocking fee on eBay returns?

No. If you qualify under eBay's condition of returned items policy, you can deduct up to 50% of the refund for lost value when an item comes back used, damaged or missing parts, but that is not a restocking fee.

Does a no-returns policy protect me in January?

Only from change-of-mind returns. Buyers can still return items that do not match the listing under the eBay Money Back Guarantee.

Are Facebook Marketplace local pickup sales covered by Purchase Protection?

No. Purchase Protection covers shipped items bought through Marketplace checkout. Local pickup sales are not covered.
